Sustainable Futures Carbon Bank enables UK farms to play a significant role in helping to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, positively benefiting UK actions being taken to reach a net-zero carbon food and drink industry and the worldwide effects of climate change whilst generating a new income stream.

How farms can sequester carbon
Carbon dioxide is sequestered into the soil via plants through the process of photosynthesis. The soil stores the sequestered carbon dioxide as soil organic carbon (SOC). Sustainable Futures Carbon Bank work with farms to implement new or additional nature-based farming solutions which can increase the amount of carbon dioxide that is sequestered into the farmland soil. Solutions include growing cover crops or catch crops as part of the rotation plan, minimising tillage techniques, and growing companion crops and grass leys in the system.
Tom Mellor’s Yorkshire farm generated carbon credits for RELX
Carbon credits generated on Tom Mellor’s farm on the Yorkshire Wolds have been purchased by RELX, a global provider of information-based analytics and decision tools for professional and business customers. The carbon credits will help RELX to meet its commitment to become net zero by 2040.

Upon approval of your application, your farm is awarded certification as a Sustainable Futures Carbon Bank farm. Your farm is provided with comprehensive information and support to implement farming practices that increase the amount of carbon that can be sequestered in the soil on your farm
Carbon sequestered in the soil on your farm is measured as it builds, verified then certified in the form of carbon credits
The carbon credits are available to be purchased from Sustainable Futures Carbon Bank by supply chain partners, business and organisations to meet their sustainability and emissions offsetting commitments
Your farm receives payment for the carbon credits sold
