Follow the supply chain from grower to consumer

Sustainable Futures hosts events and activities for its partners to provide an insight into the individual stages of the supply chain and provide opportunities for knowledge to be transferred between the partners.

Our farm partners are invited to events relevant to their specific commodity; sugar beet, wheat, potato or barley. Some events provide insight for more than one commodity, results in a good mix of attendees who share ideas and experiences with one another.

The objective of events and activities organised by Sustainable Futures is to learn from other farmers, processors and research facilities about best practice, new innovations and novel farming techniques. The transfer of knowledge among the different individuals and organisations that contribute to the supply chain will help those involved to have a more sustainable future.

Events and activities

Sustainable Futures delivers five categories of events & activities to give our partners

Walk the supply chain

To fully understand the processes involved for commodities to reach the consumer, the Walk The Supply Chain events demonstrate the journey from grower to packaging plant. The Walk The Supply Chain events include a visit to a processing facility operated by one of our partners, such as Heineken or KP Snacks, to contextualise the optimal specification requirements for the commodities grown by our farm partners. We look at several key areas of the processing facility including storage logistics, waste, processes and packaging and learn how these are affected by the raw material.

Farm walk

The Farm Walk events take place on a partner farm to observe best practice and technology applied to real farming environments. The farmers and staff share their knowledge and enthusiasm about the methods they apply to get specific results.

On-farm trials

Trials take on academic research and development onto the farm so that farmers get the benefit from the latest scientific knowledge, today, and make it work for them and their business.

Travel to learn

The Travel to Learn events are location-based visits, normally abroad, to observe how farmers and growers from other countries apply different technologies and sustainable farming practices. The most recent events took place in Midwest America to observe new regenerative farming practices.

Annual conference

Each year, we welcome partners and non-partners to the Sustainable Futures Conference to hear how the Agri-Food supply chain collaborates in Yorkshire. A range of speakers from practicing farmers to food and drink brands share how they are working with the supply chain to innovate, reduce costs, add value and produce ‘More from Less’.
